October 12, 2014 Fall foliage update.  (Altitude 1,800 - 2,400)
Far western North Carolina - Murphy, Hayesville, Hiawassee, Andrews area report.

Thanks to a 24 hour cold snap last weekend the leaves are begining to change in earnest. The dogwoods are now a deep purple, some scarlet red virigina creeper can be seen among the trees and the sugar maples have flared to life this week.  Hickorys, maples, and poplars are about 50% yellow.  And the sourwoods are really adding some red to the forest. Most of the oaks are still green below 2,400 feet.  Higher elevation locations such as Nantalhala wilderness east of Hayesville, Cherohala skyway or the rim trail at Firescreek should be putting on a nice show around now. Our current guess for the peak for the North Georgia and extreme western NC 2014 leaf season is November 1st.
